Alejandra Gomez Becomes Cypress College's Most Decorated Diver, Clinching Third CCCAA State Title

CUPERTINO, CA – Sophomore Alejandra Gomez became the most decorated women's diver in Cypress College history with her performance at this year's CCCAA State Swim & Dive Championships. Gomez repeated as the CCCAA State Champion on the 3-meter board and broke the state meet record on the 1-meter board to earn her third state title in two seasons.

Gomez began the weekend with 254.10 points on the 1-meter board, breaking the record set just last year by Santa Barbara's Gina Jacobson (246.85) in winning the shorter board. Gomez won by nearly 50 points over second-place Ashley Dettman (San Diego Mesa) and third-place finisher Sarah Duke (Saddleback). She took the lead by the second of her six dives.

She followed up Thursday's performance with a tremendous showing on the 3-meter board. Gomez won what is believed to be the closest diving title in California Community College history with a score of 246.90, defeating silver medalist Ashley Dettman of San Diego Mesa by .35 of a point. The high board championship came down to the final dive. Dettman was leading, 204.55-192.90, but Gomez scored the entire event's highest scoring dive with 54 points on a forward-2-1/2 pike. Dettman's 42 points on a back-1-1/2 with 1-1/2 twist came up a hair short. Saddleback's Sarah Duke grabbed the bronze with 238.10 points while Sierra's Milena Milbern was a strong fourth at 223.30.

Women's swimmers Jordyn Morris and Kayleen Bretz also scored some points for the Lady Chargers, who finished 18th overall in the state meet. Bretz finished 12th in the 500-free and 10th in the 1650-free, notching a total of 17 points. Morris finished 13th in the 50-free and 12th in the 100-free, totaling 18 points for Cypress.

The Lady Chargers swim and dive team totaled 75 points for the meet, finishing ahead of all other OEC schools, with the exception of team state champion Orange Coast. Gomez was selected as the CCCAA Women's Diver of the Year for the second consecutive season.
