No. 13 Chargers Erase Halftime Deficit to Defeat Gauchos, 81-73

CYPRESS, CA – The Lady Chargers (13-7, 5-1 OEC) bounced back from Wednesday's loss nicely with an 81-73 victory over the visiting Saddleback Gauchos (4-15, 1-5 OEC) in Gym  II on Friday night.

Cypress freshman Hannah Avila-McArthur led the way with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for her team leading fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Gabrielle Carbajal added 16 points and 5 assists. Freshman Tayler Nance chipped in a season-high 12 points, drilling 4-of-5 looks from long range.

The Gauchos' Raven Herrington and Bree Shepard carried Saddleback with 17 points and 19 points, respectively.

Turnovers plagued the Chargers throughout the first quarter. Saddleback was able to capitalize on offense and take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter. Teams traded baskets in the second quarter, but a three-pointer from Shepard to beat the halftime buzzer would extend Saddlebacks lead to five points at the break, 37-42.

The Chargers took control of the game in the second half. Nance ignited the Cypress offense with three of her four made 3-pointers in the third quarter to help give the Lady Chargers a two-point lead heading into the final frame.

Shepard picked up her fourth foul early in the final quarter, allowing Cypress' Gabrielle Carbajal to go into attack mode on offense. Carbajal scored eight of her 16 points in the quarter to help seal the victory for Cypress.

The Lady Chargers are on the road for both games next week. They will travel to Santa Ana College for Wednesday's game at 7:00pm, followed by a trip to Joshua Tree to take on Copper Mountain at 5:00pm.
