Cypress Strikes First in Super Regional Showdown
Chargers shut out Saddleback 2-0 to grab Game 1 and move within one win of a State Tournament return
CYPRESS, CA – In clutch late-game hitting, the Cypress College Chargers defeated the Saddleback Bobcats 2-0 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 3C2A SoCal Super Regionals. With the win, Cypress (34-9) moves one victory away from punching their ticket to the 3C2A State Tournament, set for May 15-18.
The game was a defensive battle through five innings, with both teams held scoreless. Tucker was in command from the circle for Cypress, tossing a complete-game shutout while scattering just three hits and striking out three.
The Chargers broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to Amanda Johansen, who delivered the game's decisive blow—a two-run double to deep center that scored Tina Payne and Mickayla Galaviz. An error on the play allowed Johansen to advance to third. Johansen finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double.
Galaviz and Payne each added a hit and a run scored, while Nanea Kyle—recently named to the NFCA Cal JC All-America Team—chipped in with a double and a solid performance in center field. Cypress totaled eight hits on the day and played error-free defense.
UP NEXT: Game two of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 12:00 pm with the winner of the series earning a spot in the State Tournament.
