Cypress Upsets Orange Coast in OEC Thriller
Cypress Outlasts Orange Coast 6-5
CYPRESS, CA – In a battle between two of the top teams in the Orange Empire Conference, the Cypress Chargers came out on top with a gritty 6-5 victory over the Orange Coast College Pirates on Tuesday afternoon. The win pushes Cypress to 27-8 overall and 11-2 in conference, while Orange Coast drops to 26-5 overall and 14-2 in conference. Freshman Haley Tucker tossed a complete game and holding off a relentless Pirates offense that tallied 13 hits. Tucker struck out one and walked one. Cypress opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Makayla Motis came home on a groundout by Mickayla Galaviz. In the third, Nanea Kyle tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Motis to make it 2-0. Orange Coast responded in the fourth with a pair of runs, including an RBI double from Kayla Vargas and a groundout by Maiah Rodriguez. The Pirates took a 4-2 lead in the fifth behind RBIs from Jasmyn Morales and Isabel Lopez. But the Chargers weren't done. In the bottom half of the fifth, Cypress stormed back with a four-run rally. Giselle Delcastillo delivered a clutch RBI single before Kyle had an RBI double to tie it at four. Motis then reached on a fielding error that brought in the go-ahead run, and Kyle scored on a passed ball to cap off the explosive inning and give Cypress a 6-4 advantage. Orange Coast narrowed the lead in the seventh when Brooke Whiteman scored on a wild pitch, but Tucker regrouped and retired the final batter to seal the win. Cypress was led by Nanea Kyle, who went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. Motis added two RBIs, and Delcastillo came off the bench with a key hit to ignite the Chargers' comeback.
