Cypress Falls Short in Pitching Duel vs Mt. SAC, 1-0

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers (15-7, 13-5 OEC) hosted the Mt. San Antonio Mounties (11-5) on Thursday afternoon for their final non-conference game of the season. Runs were at a premium as the Mounties took the game from the Chargers, 1-0, splitting the season series between the two teams with two wins a piece. 

Eliza Sandoval (L, 7-2) pitched another fantastic game for the Chargers as she threw a complete game giving up one run on five hits. Paige Shafer (2-for-3) was the only Charger to record two hits on the afternoon. Cameron Curiel (1-for-2, BB) and Emily Adkison (1-for-3) each notched a single for Cypress. Natalie Gonzalez (1-for-2, BB) of Mt. SAC had the only RBI on the day. Annalisa Panuco (W, 6-2) pitched a solid seven innings for the Mounties and earned the win. 

The action started in the top of the third when the Mounties had the bases loaded with one out. Pitcher, Eliza Sandoval, was able to work her way out of danger getting the next two batters to fly out. In the bottom of third, Cypress took the momentum as Cameron Curiel reached base on a bunt single and advanced to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher. Jordan Thompson was next up and she worked a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. Alyssa Huerta lined out on a hard hit ball to the shortstop forcing the runnres to stay put. Paige Shafer had a tough battle at the plate, but ultimately struck out looking ending the Cypress rally. The first two batters of the fourth inning were retired and then Mikenna Barcelona reached base via a bunt. Barcelona then stole second on the next pitch to advance into scoring postion. Natalie Gonzalez singled to right field scoring Barcelona, knocking in the lone run of the game. The Chargers were unable to get a runner past second base as they went on to lose, 1-0. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers will go on the road tomorrow for their final double-header of the season as they face Golden West. First pitch will be at 12pm.
