#3 Chargers Take Game One Over #14 Southwestern, 8-2

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College softball team opened CCCAA postseason play at home on Friday with an 8-2 victory Southwestern. The Chargers will look to close out the best of three Southern California Regional Series in tomorrow's game two, scheduled for 12:00 pm, followed by an if necessary game three tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

Sophomore OEC Pitcher of the Year and All-State selection, Hope Davalos (W, 23-6), received the start and the win for Cypress in the circle. Davalos tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Southwestern's Trudie Nixon (L, 20-9) received the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in five innings of work.

Freshman All-State selection Infinity Laufou (2-for-4, 4 RBI, HR) and sophomore All-OEC Second Teamer Kellee Ross (3-for-4, RBI) led the Cypress offense.

The Jaguars came ready to play, lighting up Davalos for four hits and two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. However, the Chargers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game 2-2.

After her first inning struggles, Davalos settled in, shutting out Southwestern for the remainder of the game.

Cypress took the lead in the second on a sacrifice fly from OEC Player of the Year Sydney McCollum (1-for-3, RBI). The Chargers added another run in the fourth on an infield RBI single from Laufou, before taking a three-run lead in the fifth as pinch runner Rebecca Espinosa scored from third on a wild pitch.

Laufou capped off the game with a three-run bomb over the center field wall, for her team-leading sixth HR of the season.
