No. 3 Softball Takes Down District Rival Fullerton, 9-1

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College softball team (25-3, 13-2 OEC) dominated the visiting Fullerton College Hornets (13-15, 6-8 OEC) in five innings on Wednesday, 9-1. The Hornets handed the Chargers their first loss of the season, which ended the program's streak of 62 consecutive wins, in their first matchup of the year.

Sophomore ace Hope Davalos (W, 18-3) was lights out against the Hornets, allowing only one run on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings. Fullerton's Natasha Trujillo (L, 12-11) gave up nine runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings to receive the loss.

Freshman Vanessa Ayala (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Jessie Gomez (2-for-2, 2 RBI) powered the Cypress offense.

The Chargers got going early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Sydney McCollum (3-for-4, RBI) got the rally started with a leadoff triple before Gabrielle Munoz (0-for-2, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice that scored McCollum. Sophomore Tianna Harris (1-for-1, RBI) added the second run of the game with an RBI single to right field and Ayala would drive in the final run of the inning with a fielder's choice RBI.

Defense and pitching tightened up in second inning, as neither team would score until the top of the fifth. Fullerton got on the board with an RBI single from Vee Garza, making it a 3-1 game. The Chargers erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped off by an RBI single from Infinity Laufou (1-for-4, RBI) to end the game via mercy rule, 9-1.

The Lady Chargers will take a break from Orange Empire Conference action the rest of the week. Cypress will host Cerritos College on Friday at 3:00 p.m. followed by a Saturday double-header against Palomar College at 1:00/3:00 p.m.
