Cypress Softball Wins Collegiate Record 62 Consecutive Games

FULLERTON, CA – They say all good things come to an end, the Cypress College softball program lived it on Friday as the longest collegiate winning streak in softball history ended at 62 games against district rival Fullerton College. The Chargers went on a 48-0 run during the 2017 season to become the first undefeated CCCAA State Softball Champions, before adding to their unprecedented run with 14 consecutive wins to begin the 2018 season, setting a new collegiate record of 62 consecutive wins.

Longest Collegiate Softball Winning Streaks:

  • CCCAA – Cypress College (62) 2017-18
  • NCAA Div. II – Northern Kentucky (55) 2005
  • NCAA Div. III – Tufts (52) 2015
  • NCAA Div. I – University of Arizona (47) 1997
  • NAIA – Oklahoma City University (47) 2017

During the streak, the Chargers outscored their opponents 518 to 110 with 30 games ending in less than seven innings via the mercy rule.

"Last year's team did most of the heavy lifting, winning all 48 games, but this year's team has been playing really well," said Head Coach Brad Pickler. "We knew it was going to end at some point. You can't go undefeated forever. Obviously, we didn't want to lose, but the girls felt a little relieved. Now they have the monkey off their back and they can go out and just play without worrying about it. It was fun while it lasted and we still have a lot of big games coming up."

The top-ranked Chargers rebounded from Friday's loss with a 14-1 victory over Grossmont College on Saturday, improving their record to 15-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Cypress College softball program still has an impressive streak of 42 consecutive home victories, with their last loss coming against Palomar College (4/16/16).
