No. 1 Chargers Cruise Past Fullerton, 10-0

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress College softball team (16-0, 7-0 OEC) easily dispatched Fullerton College (7-10, 2-5 OEC) 10-0 in 5 innings on Friday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in California.

Destiny Vasquez (9-0) got the start and picked up her ninth win of the season as she dominated the Hornets while striking out 6 and allowing just 3 hits. Sydney McCollum (3-for-3, 4 RBI) and Melanie Okazaki (2-for-4, 2 RBI) powered the Chargers offense.

Shelby Boehmer (1-2) received the loss for the Hornets as she pitched 0.2 innings while allowing 5 runs on 4 hits.

The Chargers struck quickly and often as they scored 6 runs in the first inning. With 1 out McCollum gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead when she scored on an illegal pitch by Boehmer. Vazquez delivered an RBI single after back-to-back base hits to increase the Chargers lead to 2-0. Nicole Wise (0-for-3, RBI) followed with an RBI groundout to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead. Following the groundout the Chargers recorded 5 straight hits to add 3 more runs as they took an early 6-0 lead.

The Chargers offense would continue to roll as McCollum would drive in 2 more runs in the third inning on a single to center field to give the Chargers a commanding 8-0 advantage. Cypress added 2 more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by McCollum and Okazaki. Hailey Hoffman (1-0) came into the game to pitch in the fifth inning and recorded the last 2 outs as the Chargers won 10-0.

No. 1 softball will return to action with a doubleheader at home against Grossmont College on Saturday, March 11 with the first game at 12:00 pm and the second game scheduled for 2:00 pm.
