No. 3 Chargers Handle Lancers, 7-2

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College softball team (4-0) defeated Pasadena City College (1-3) 7-2 at home on Wednesday. The Chargers entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 2 in Southern California.

Destiny Vasquez (2-0) got the start for Cypress and notched her second win of the season as she struck out 8 batters and allowed only 3 hits over 5.1 innings. Melanie Okazaki (2-for-2, 3RBI) and Sydney McCollum (1-for-3, 2RBI) led the Chargers offense.

Pica Madrid (0-1) received the loss for the Lancers, allowing 4 hits and 4 earned runs in 3 innings pitched while walking 3 batters and hitting 2.

The Chargers got off to a quick start in the second inning as their first run came on a bases loaded walk by Emma Walker (0-for-2, RBI). Two batters later, Okazaki singled to center field to drive in two more runs to give the Chargers an early 3-0 lead. Destiny Vazquez (3-for-3, RBI) extended the Chargers lead to 4-0 with a double to left field in the third inning. The Chargers added two more runs in the fourth inning on a double by McCollum to pad their lead to 6-0. Okazaki doubled in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 7-0. The Lancers would strike for one run in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning to narrow the score to 7-2 as the Chargers came away with the victory.

No. 3 softball will return to action at home against Long Beach City College on Friday, Feb. 10 at 2:00 PM.
