Chargers Edges Out Grossmont in Thrilling 15–14 Victory
In a game that was close for all 4 quarters, Cypress beats Grossmont
CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's water polo team (7-6, 0-2 OEC) battled through a high-intensity matchup to claim a narrow 15–14 win over Grossmont College (7-6, 0-1 PCAC) on Friday evening.
The Chargers came out firing in the first period with goals from Wes Brazda, Mathew Arauz, and James Luther, setting the tone early. Cypress carried that momentum into the second period as Kai Banua, Phearson Rosenlof, and Arauz extended the lead. Luther added back-to-back goals, and a perfectly executed passing sequence from Zack Populus to Cooper Chapman, then to Luke Edmunson, capped off the half with Cypress leading 10–8.
Cypress' defensive intensity picked up in the third period, forcing an early shot clock violation. Luther connected with Victor Abella for a goal before Brazda and Arauz each added to the tally, giving the Chargers a 13–11 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Populus came up clutch with multiple saves while Abella and Brazda made key defensive stops. Arauz found Rosenlof for a long-range strike to make it 14–13, and Tannehill assisted Brazda on a crucial goal with just five seconds left on the shot clock. As the clock wound down, the Chargers' defense forced a turnover, and Brazda ran out the final seconds to secure the win.
