Late Offensive Surge Lifts Cypress Past Saddleback, 1-0
Great reads and team communication leads to Cypress scoring late in the 2nd half
CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's soccer team (9-3-5, 5-2-3 OEC) secured a gritty 1–0 victory over Saddleback (4-10-2, 3-6-1 OEC) on Friday afternoon, powered by a late goal from freshman Erik Hernandez in the 83rd minute.
The Chargers controlled possession throughout the match, outshooting the Bobcats 14–5 and earning six corner kicks while holding Saddleback without a single set-piece opportunity. Despite several chances in the first half, Cypress couldn't find the breakthrough until Jesse Gonzalez delivered a sharp through ball to Hernandez, who buried the game-winner.
Hernandez led all players with six shots and four on target, while Gonzalez added two shots and an assist. Cypress goalkeeper Demian Baldovinos recorded two saves to earn the clean sheet, marking the Chargers' fifth shutout of the season.
The Chargers will return to action next week as they continue conference play, looking to strengthen their postseason position. They currently sit in 3rd place in the OEC, just tailing behind Golden West and Irvine Valley.
