Chargers Pull Away Late to Defeat Santa Monica, 79-62
Cypress comes out on top in a physical matchup.
CYPRESS, CA - Cypress College men's basketball (9-3, 0-0 OEC) used a strong second-half surge to secure a convincing 79–62 victory over Santa Monica (3-11, 0-0 WSC) on Friday evening at Cypress College.
The Chargers entered the locker room with a 32–25 halftime advantage before turning up the intensity after the break, outscoring the Corsairs 47–37 in the second half. Cypress shot an efficient 62.1 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, pulling away with consistent scoring and defensive pressure.
Jack Rivera led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, knocking down three triples while adding four assists. Michael Wright recorded 16 points and nine rebounds, going a 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, while Moises Hernandez chipped in 12 points on an efficient 5-of-8 performance from the floor.
Isaiah Valenzuela and Amaan Zavahir each added seven points, while the Chargers received solid contributions throughout the rotation. Valenzuela also made his presence known on the defensive end, forcing multiple turnovers and ending with 2 blocks and 2 steals. Cypress finished with 16 assists on 28 made field goals and capitalized on Santa Monica turnovers, scoring 28 points off of miscues.
Defensively, the Chargers controlled the paint, outscoring Santa Monica 34–22 inside and limiting second-chance opportunities. Cypress also held Santa Monica to 42.3 percent shooting for the game, despite the Corsairs' improved efficiency in the second half.
