Cypress Competes in the Grossmont College Tournament
The Chargers come in 3rd place in a competitive weekend.
EL CAJON, CA - The Chargers (6-3, 0-0 OEC) headed over to Grossmont College to participate in their tournament this past weekend. Spanning over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, their competitors included Grossmont (1-7, 0-0 PCAC), San Diego City (7-2, 0-0 PCAC), and LA Trade Tech (4-5, 0-0 SCC).
Game 1: Cypress 89, Grossmont 73
The Cypress College men's basketball team put together one of its most complete offensive performances of the season, powering past Grossmont on Saturday with an 89–73 road victory. The Chargers shot an efficient 47.7% from the field, dominated the glass, and saw five players score in double figures.
Michael Wright led the way with a game-high 22 points, attacking the rim relentlessly and finishing 10-for-14 at the free-throw line while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Jack Rivera followed with 16 points and five rebounds, knocking down timely shots to keep Cypress comfortably in front.
Cypress' bench proved to be a major difference-maker, contributing 26 points and sustaining the momentum throughout the night. Mason Johnson delivered a strong performance with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds. Zack Moritz added seven points, five assists, and three steals, and freshman forward Amaan Zavahir chipped in 10 points, four boards, and a block.
Defensively, the Chargers stayed locked in, forcing 13 Grossmont turnovers and holding the Griffins to 39% shooting. Cypress controlled the boards with a 45–35 rebounding advantage, highlighted by Moises Hernandez and Wright each collecting eight rebounds.
With the win, Cypress continues to build momentum as the season progresses, showing improved balance, ball movement, and bench production.
Game 2: Cypress 55, San Diego City 56
Cypress came up just one point shy of a win in a 56–55 loss to San Diego City on Saturday night.
Michael Wright delivered another standout performance, overwhelming the Knights inside with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting while adding 11 rebounds for a dominant double-double.
Lincoln Dean provided a needed spark off the bench, knocking down two threes and finishing with 11 points and three assists. Zack Moritz added eight points and five rebounds in a strong two-way effort.
Defensively, Cypress played one of its best games of the season, limiting San Diego City to three made three-pointers and forcing 13 turnovers. Hayden Roberts anchored the perimeter defense while collecting six rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Game 3: Cypress 63, LA Trade Tech 49
Cypress earned a strong 63–49 win over LA Trade-Tech in their final game of the weekend.
The Chargers held the Beavers to just 24.5% shooting from the field and 25% from three, smothering nearly every offensive attempt.
Offensively, Amaan Zavahir led the charge with an efficient 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, adding four rebounds and three steals in one of his most complete performances of the season. Michael Wright posted another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, going 11-for-18 at the free-throw line and anchoring Cypress on both ends.
Jack Rivera contributed 11 points and five boards, while Hayden Roberts and Moises Hernandez combined for nine points.
Off the bench, Zack Moritz delivered eight points, six rebounds, and two steals, helping Cypress maintain control whenever the starters rested. The Chargers won the rebounding battle decisively, 40–35, and forced 14 LA Trade-Tech turnovers.
Cypress also made a statement at the rim, blocking three shots and contesting everything inside, which aided in holding LA Trade-Tech to just 13 made field goals on the night.
