Charger Comeback Falls Short in CCCAA Super Regional

TORRANCE, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (30-15) fell to No. 2 El Camino (36-7) in a win or go home game three of their CCCAA Super Regional Series on Friday, 8-7.

The Chargers fought back from a 6-3 deficit, scoring four runs to take a one run lead in the top of the ninth inning. However, the Warriors answered with a two run walk-off home run to end the Chargers' championship hopes and advance to the CCCAA Sectionals.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the ninth inning, Cypress began a four-run rally with back-to-back triples to start the inning. Rafael Flores (2-for-4) tripled to right center, followed by an RBI triple from Augie Mattei (1-for-2, RBI). Mariano Ricciardi (1-for-5, 2RBI) slapped an RBI single up the middle, making it a one run game. Isaiah Stewart (1-for-5, RBI) would tie the game on the third triple of the inning, scoring on a balk to take the lead, 7-6.

With one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth, El Camino's Spencer Long, who gave up the four runs to Cypress on the mound at the top of the inning, homered to centerfield to seal it for the Warriors.
