Cats dominate Chargers in series opener

The Saddleback baseball team opened a three-game series against Cypress College with an 18-3 win on Tuesday at Doug Fritz Field.  The Bobcats scored in the first six innings in blowing out the Chargers.

Saddleback wore out Cypress pitching on Tuesday, pounding out 19 hits in route to a dominating win.  The Bobcats built up an 18-1 lead through six innings before taking their foot off the gas pedal.

Cole Koniarsky and Luc Stuka both finished 4-for-5 in the game and Zachary Schwartzberg finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored.  The only guy in the starting lineup without a hit was Jacob Naso, who walked three times and scored two runs.

Saddleback was also solid on the defensive side behind ace pitcher Connor Wilford.  The Bobcats committed no errors in the field while Wilford pitched through the seventh inning in improving to 6-1 on the year.  Wilford struck out four while spreading around nine hits in lowering his ERA to 2.08 for the season.  He didn't walk a batter on Tuesday and now has just five walks through 47.2 innings of work for the year.

Schwartzberg remained hot at the plate on Tuesday and now has hit safely in seven straight games.  Schwartzberg is 14-for-31 with two walks since March 8, raising his batting average to .382 for the year. 

Saddleback is now 18-6 overall and 5-2 in Orange Empire Conference play.  The Bobcats will continue the three-game series at Cypress on Tuesday at 2:00 PM before returning home on Friday for a 2:00 PM start.
