The Irvine Valley men's soccer team had a tough loss last Friday at Orange Coast.
The Lasers out-shot OCC, 18-5, but suffered a 2-1 defeat on two, set-piece goals by the Pirates.
Irvine Valley got a chance to get back on the pitch Tuesday at home and wasted no time in cruising to a win.
The Lasers attacked early and often and defeated Cypress, 5-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 7-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference. The Lasers have won seven of their last nine matches.
Freshman midfielder Jacob Edwards led the way with two goals and two assists in the win. Edwards now has five goals, four assists and a team-leading 14 points on the year.
"It is excatly what we were looking for," Irvine Valley coach Conor Ward said of his squad's performance. "We knew if we got an early goal we would be on our way. We have that ability if teams give us some space. Cypress is a good team, but we were clinical in front of the goal and it is what we have been working on since last Friday."
Irvine Valley scored three goals in the first half to take control.
In the 14th minute, freshman midfielder Anthony Ocampo put IVC on the board with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Julian Svoboda.
The Lasers were back at it three minutes later when Edwards hit a perfect strike. He found the upper left corner of the net off another assist from Svoboda.
Svoboda recorded his ninth and 10 assists of the season in the match.
And Irvine Valley made it a 3-0 game in the 27th minute when Edwards hit a shot after an Irvine Valley corner kick that deflected off of a Cypress defender and went in.
Cypress rallied back into the game six minutes into the second half with a penalty kick goal by Braulio Morales to the lower left corner.
Irvine Valley responded in the 61st minute to go back up by three goals. Freshman forward Christopher Camarena scored on a one-time shot off a cross from Edwards.
And the Lasers capped their scoring in the 78th minute on one of their best goals of the day when freshman forward Grant Miller found the back of the net on a header off the corner-kick assist from Edwards.
It is the third match this season where Irvine Valley has scored at least five goals in a win.
"The goals are all things that we have been working on and we know if we get the ball into those areas with the quality we have, it is going to take care of itself," Ward said. "Today we got the reward and it is nice to get three points in the conference."
Freshman goalie Tygo Steenvoorden made two saves on the day for the Lasers.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m. for a conference match.
