Women’s Volleyball Takes Set from Cypress, Falls in Four
The Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team hosted their second-consecutive Orange Empire Conference (OEC) match on Friday night with the Cypress College Chargers acting as their opponent. The Hawks went down two set to none, but battled back to win the third set and mount a comeback effort. However, a competitive fourth set did not roll their way leading to a four-set loss.
The Hawks jumped out to a massive 10-point lead in the third set with the Chargers facing a 15-5 deficit. Cypress remained true to their approach and brought the set to within two points at 24-22, but the Hawks ultimately got the job done winning the set 25-23.
The fourth set was equally as competitive, but the Hawks were unable to get over the hump thus suffering a loss.
Sophomore Chelsea Riedel was the main factor in the Hawk's success by tallying 20 kills on a match-high 52 attempts. She finished with an impressive .308 kill percentage while adding 11 digs and two service aces.
Freshman Jayden Sessom impressed on the back line by recording a career-high and team-high 16 digs to go along with an ace. Sophomore Ashlyn Smith followed with 10 digs, while recording five kills on 37 attempts.
The Hawks recorded three blocks on the night with a solo stuff from sophomore Sophie Ziglinski that sealed the third-set win. Freshman Riley Bingel and Smith teamed up for a block as well.
Bingel was productive in her attack by tallying four kills and leaning down for five digs. Sophomore Peyton Speakman was the gears to the offense by recording 28 assist to push her double-digit assists streak to four-consecutive matches. She added seven digs and two service aces in the process.
