Women’s Tennis Sweeps Cypress in Conference Action

It was rinse and repeat for the Riverside City College women's tennis team on Thursday afternoon as they hosted the Cypress College Chargers for the second-consecutive Orange Empire Conference (OEC) match. It was the Tigers home opener and home court advantage proved beneficial as they cruised to a 9-0 victory.

Mirroring last Tuesday's showing, Riverside came out strong by sweeping doubles play.

Freshman tandem Keeley Arendt and Daisie Flores successfully worked towards a quick 8-5 victory. Freshman squad Samantha Treat and Kalena Yanez, who acted as the number two doubles team, earned an 8-6 win. Freshman duo Marvonna Vaxter and Semaj Walter teamed up as the third doubles team and pocketed an easy 8-0 victory.

Singles play was equally as successful. All matches ended in two sets with Flores and Yanez setting the pace. Acting as the fifth and sixth singles players, respectfully, the two earned victories reading 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0.

Treat held the top singles position for the second-straight match and triumphed by the final score of 6-1, 6-1. Arendt finished with a 6-0, 6-4 win, while Vaxter followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win after going three sets just two days ago against the same opponent.

Walter sealed the sweep in a 6-3, 6-4 battle.

The Tigers, who are known to be consistent OEC contenders every season, feel confident about their 2-0 start.

Arendt, one of two returners from the 2020 roster, was satisfied with her performance.

"I felt good," said Arendt. "[My game] felt really good in the first set and my opponent knew my game a little bit. I just had to keep fighting and I kept drawing her to the net, I did my thing and I pulled it out."

Orange Coast is up next on the schedule and Arendt sounds read to rumble.

"I'm excited for them. They're a good team and I think we are going to have some good matches."
