Beach Volleyball Kicks Off Conference Action
Under the new leadership of head coach Niloofar Mojab, the Santiago Canyon College beach volleyball team hit the sand last Friday at the Great Park in Irvine to host the Cypress College Chargers and the Riverside City College Tigers in orange Empire Conference (OEC) action. The Hawks lost both matches by the final scores of 4-1, but the top duo of Ashlyn Smith and Ava Cline went undefeated on the day.
Smith and Cline teamed up as the top pairs team and shined by defeating Cypress' top squad in three sets, followed by a sweep of the Tigers' top pair.
Smith and Cline dominated the opening set against the Chargers by cruising to a 21-8 triumph. They slipped by a narrow margin in the second set, 22-20, but came soaring back to take the final set 15-9. They ventured on to dominate the Tigers by the final set scores of 21-11 and 21-6.
Chelsea Riedel and Jayden Sessom paired up as the second pair and fell in both games, while Lieann Navarro and Sophie Ziglinski followed with a pair of two-set losses.
