Cypress Chargers Women’s Water Polo Goes 2-2 At Battle of the Beach Tournament
The Chargers struggled in the first two matchups against Santa Barbara and San Diego Miramar but came back with victories against Cuesta and Grossmont.
CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress Chargers faced a challenging weekend in women's water polo, beginning with tough losses on Friday, October 25. The team first fell to Santa Barbara, with a final score of 20-9, followed by a 15-7 defeat against San Diego Miramar. Despite the setbacks early in the tournament, the team responded with two wins the next day over Cuesta and Grossmont College.
On Saturday, October 26, Cypress bounced back impressively with two victories. They started the day strong, defeating Cuesta College 10-7. The momentum continued as the Chargers faced Grossmont College, securing a 12-8 win that highlighted their strategic play.
In the match against Grossmont, Cypress displayed creativity with their playbook, effectively utilizing picks and drives to create scoring opportunities. Goalie Megan Lundquist was instrumental in the first period, making several key saves that kept the Chargers in the game early on.
The halftime score stood at 7-4 in favor of Cypress, and they continued to extend their lead, finishing the third period at 10-4. A standout moment came when Jillian Van Gemert assisted Karly Lepel by tipping in a crucial shot, showcasing the teamwork and chemistry that fueled their success. The top performers were Jillian Van Gemert and Brooke Shiohama. Jillian compiled a total of 13 goals, 1 assist, and 6 steals while Brooke put up 5 goals, 8 assists, and 3 steals.
UP NEXT: The Chargers will begin the Orange Empire Conference championships at Golden West College against Fullerton on Thursday, November 7th at 9:00 am.
