Cypress Defeats Saddleback in Comeback Thriller, Ranked 9th in the State

MISSION VIEJO, CA - The Cypress College women's water polo team (9-4, 2-3 OEC) took on Saddleback College (9-7, 1-3 OEC) on Wednesday afternoon and in a thrilling comeback, defeated the Gauchos, 11-8.

The Chargers fell behind early to the Gauchos, trailing 7-3 at the half. The only goal for Cypress in the opening quarter came from sophomore utility, Josie Miller. Second quarter goals came from Miller and Allison Gracia, both goals assisted by Sara Morris.

However, the Chargers would rally from a four-goal deficit, scoring eight goals in the second half. Morris would claim an unassisted goal for herself in the third quarter along with Miller netting two more goals, one of which was assisted by Natasha Velez. Velez would also get on the score sheet with an assist from Gracia.

The fourth quarter would complete the scoring for the Chargers with four goals. Velez added three more goals to her total, with one unassisted goal and two assists from Gracia and Rachelle Addam. Morris would round out the scoring for the Chargers with an assist from Velez, ending the game with a Charger victory, 11-8. A huge win for the Chargers as they now find themselves ranked 9th in the state. The first state ranking in over 20 years for the women's water polo team.

Women's water polo will return to action in this weekend's "Battle of the Beach" tournament, hosted by Cypress and Long Beach City College. Full Tournament schedule is available HERE.
