Lady Chargers Win Fifth Straight, Knock Off Pirates in OT 12-10

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's water polo team (8-3, 1-2 OEC) won a thriller in overtime at home against Orange Coast College (2-8, 0-2 OEC) on Wednesday, 12-10. It was the Chargers' fifth consecutive victory, and first win in Orange Empire Conference play this season.

The Chargers fell behind early, trailing 3-2 at the end of the opening quarter, but picked it up defensively in the second quarter. After Cypress' Josie Miller tied the game at 3-3, both teams traded goals and went into halftime tied at five goals apiece.

The game continued to go back and forth in the second half as the Chargers squandered a couple opportunities at goal to put the game away. Tied 10-10 with just 20 seconds to play in the final quarter, the Chargers called timeout to draw up a play, but were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds, as the game would head into overtime.

Cypress came alive in overtime, taking the lead on a goal from Allison Gracia. Sophomore goalie, Kaylie Merrill, came up with two of her seven saves down the stretch, allowing Sara Morris to put the game out of reach with a late goal as the Chargers went on to win 12-10.

Women's water polo will return to OEC action on the road against Riverside on Wednesday, October 10 at 3:00 pm.
