The Chargers Take Down the Pirates in Five Sets, 3-2

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's volleyball (16-8, 8-6 OEC) won the Orange Coast Pirates (16-5, 9-4 OEC) in five sets, 3-2.

The Chargers got off to a slow start in the first set as the Pirates went on a 4-0 run to open the match. Then, Shayna Martinez fired up with three kills in a row to close the Pirates lead, 3-4. It was Victoria Reza with the ace to break the draw and Martinez followed with another kill, 6-4. Both teams traded points all the way up to 25-25. Martinez went back at it with a floater dropped down the middle to put the Chargers in the lead, 26-25. Unfortunately, the defensive line missed a block and the Pirates tied the set back up, 26-26. The Pirates served and both teams battled thru a long rally until Orange Coast hit the ball out of bounds. Cypress was up 27-26 with Reza at the serve. The Chargers went for the kill and the Pirates missed the block. Cypress took the first set at 28-26.

In the second set, the Pirates kept the lead and pulled away with a 25-17 win over the Chargers. The match was then tied at 1-1 going into the third set.

Both teams battled as the Chargers looked to redeem themselves. Cypress sparked their momentum when Jessica Ferreira hit back-to-back aces for the Chargers. Cypress women's volleyball won set three, 25-22.

In set four, the Pirates did not back down and the Chargers trailed through most of the set. The Pirates went on a run and forced a fifth set, 25-22. The Chargers went on to close the last set with 5-0 run to defeat the Pirates, 15-9. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday, November 9th as they take on the Golden West Rustlers. The match is set to begin at 6PM.
