#3 Cypress Volleyball Flies Up Rankings After 4-0 Weekend

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's volleyball (8-1) traveled to San Diego Mesa College on Friday and Grossmont College on Saturday for a four-game series against Canyons, San Diego Mesa, Grossmont, and LA Mission. The Chargers returned home with a 4-0 record dropping only two sets in the four games. Freshman Libero, Zoe Munn, had an excellent showing which earned her CCCWVCA State Player of the Week.

Cypress faced off against College of the Canyons in their first matchup of the weekend. Tainea Allen led the way with 10 kills followed by Vanila Pulu-Suliafu with eight. Vanila continued setting up her teammates with 30 assists to go along with her team-leading four aces. Alexis Flores turned in three solo blocks while Alli Arriolla had two as well. Cypress would take down Canyons in three sets (25-23, 27-25, and 25-17).

The Chargers next match was against San Diego Mesa who was on a hot five game winning streak. Zoe Munn was the spark of the game for Cypress as she led the team with 13 digs and five aces. Rachel Gonzalez and Tainea Allen each led the team in kills with 10. Cypress dropped the first set of the match 23-25 but bounced back to win the next three in a row handily (25-21, 25-19, and 25-14).

On Saturday, the women's volleyball team traveled to El Cajon hoping to continue their fantastic play. #21 Cypress was geared up to take on #20 Grossmont in the first of two games as both teams were looking to stake their claim to rise up the rankings. The Chargers yet again failed to win the first set (21-25) and had to play from behind. Fortunately for Cypress, they have been in this position for much of the short season. Zoe Munn rallied her team with 16 digs and 3 aces too three straight set victories. Amanda Risch came alive with 11 kills trailing only Rachel Gonzales with 13. The Chargers won the final three sets by the score of (26-24, 25-22, and 25-18). 

In the final game of the weekend Cypress played LA Mission. The Chargers dominated their opponent in three straight sets in commanding fashion (25-15, 25-10, and 25-14). Vanila Pulu-Suliafu was the star of the match with five aces.

Coach Welliver was very pleased with her team's performance as well as Zoe Munn being awarded CCCWVCA State Player of the Week. Munn was an integral part of the Chargers huge wins over San Diego Mesa and Grossmont. Coach Welliver also wanted to applaud the effort by Vanila Pulu-Suliafu who played every minute of all four matches and is the superstar leading the Chargers success. 

UP NEXT: Cypress (8-1) will begin conference play in their next match on September 17th. The Chargers will host Saddleback College (4-0) at 6:00pm.
