No. 12 Chargers Sweep Riverside in OEC Opener

CYPRESS, CA – The No. 12 Cypress College women's volleyball team (5-2, 1-0 OEC) keep their home win streak alive with a 3-0 sweep over the Riverside Tigers (6-5, 1-1 OEC) on Wednesday night (25-19, 25-8, 25-16).

Riverside jumped out to an early lead at the start of the match before Cypress settled in to protect their home court.  The Lady Chargers' middle blocker, Mary Hicks, had several key blocks in the set to give her team a few crucial side outs. Cypress strung a few rallies together, a lot of them finished by freshman, Alondra Lamas, who had a hot hand on the night.

Cypress took all of their momentum into the second set of the night, starting with a 6-0 serving run by Danielle Gomez. The Chargers started to take control of the match in this set, not allowing the Tigers to come within more than a 6-points. Freshman libero, Lauren Adamo, also showed off her serving skills with a 6-point run of her own to separate her team, 19-4.

In the third and final set, Riverside did not go down easy. After several rallies back and forth the turning point in the game was a great dig by Gomez to put her team up, 18-12. The two teams went point for point until the Chargers took back control at 21-14 when Brittany Zavala put down a huge kill on the right side. At match point Gomez stepped up for her team once more to put it away with a dump that landed on the Tigers' center court for a Charger win, 3-0.

Women's volleyball will return this Friday, September 27th at Don Johnson Gym starting at 6:00pm against the Saddleback Gauchos.
