Women's Volleyball Set for State Tournament Action: #4 Cypress vs. #1 Gavilan

FAIRFIELD, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team will open 2018 CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Championship Tournament play in Friday night's quarterfinal against Gavilan College at 7:00 pm. The Chargers entered postseason play as a #5 seed in the south, knocking off #12 San Diego City College in three sets followed by a road win over #4 Long Beach City in five sets, to earn a State Championship Tournament berth. Cypress will open State Tournament play as the #4 seed from the south, earning a match-up against the north's top-seeded Gavilan College.

It is the Chargers' second State Tournament appearance in three years and the fifth time under the leadership of Head Coach Nancy Welliver. All-State outside hitter, Kayla Owens (So.), along with All-OEC First Team middle blocker Jane Woodward (So.) and All-OEC Second Team selections Ashley Corona (Fr.) and Marina Pilkington (So.) have successfully paced Cypress all season.

Gavilan is making their second State Tournament appearance, also the second appearance in three seasons. The Rams entered postseason play as the #2 seed in the north, sweeping Ohlone and coming back to defeat Feather River in five sets, to earn their bid.

The Coast Conference South Division Champions have the most wins in the state (29) and are currently riding a 16-match winning streak. The Rams are led by All-State middle blocker and Coast South MVP Evelyn Clonts (So.) and Head Coach Kevin Kramer.

Friday's match-up will be the first between each school in program history. Winner will advance to Saturday's semi-final.

The State Championship Tournament is an eight-team single elimination format running Friday, November 30 through Sunday, December 2 at Solano College in Fairfield, CA.
