No.14 Chargers Fall to District Rival Fullerton in Five Sets

FULLERTON, CA- After five straight wins, the Cypress College women's volleyball team (15-8, 10-4 OEC) lost in five sets (23-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-21, 11-15) on Wednesday night to the Fullerton College Hornets (13-7, 8-6 OEC).

Fullerton jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but the Chargers were not going to let their district rival off that easy. The Chargers closed the gap nearly taking the set, but the Hornets would hold on, 25-23. Down 24-19 in the second set, it looked as if the Hornets would take a two-set leadl. However, the Chargers would take the next 7 points to win the set, 26-24.

In the third set, the Chargers would be edged out by the Hornets, 26-24, but would take the fourth set, 25-21. The match would come down to a deciding fifth set. The Chargers found themselves down early to the Hornets and were unable to recover, losing the set 15-11, and the match 3-2.

Standout performers for the Chargers included Jane Woodward, Kayla Owens, and Marina Pilkington. Woodard had 13 kills on the night, with 2 block assists for a total of 15 points. Woodward led the Chargers in kills and points. Owens finished with 12 kills, 8 digs, and 2 block assist for 14 points. Pilkington added 12 kills, 1 dig, and 2 block assists.

Women's volleyball will resume OEC action on Friday at home against Santa Ana at 6:00 PM. The Chargers will close out the regular season at home next Wednesday against top-ranked Irvine Valley.
