No. 19 Chargers Sweep Gauchos for Fourth Consecutive Win

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team (14-7, 9-3 OEC) swept the Saddleback College Gauchos (7-12, 6-7 OEC) in three sets at home on Wednesday night (25-8, 25-13, 25-17). The Chargers are currently riding a four-game winning streak and sit at third in the OEC standings.

Saddleback took an early lead on the Chargers to start the first set, 2-4. The Chargers would come back and go on a 16-point run led by the outstanding play of Kayla Owens and Jane Woodward. In what would be the last play of the set, Brittany Zavala smashed the ball for a kill and the winning point.

Both teams found themselves going back and forth in the second set, neither team having an advantage over the other. What seemed like a flip of a switch, Owens began to dominate the game offensively. With the help of her teammates and two aces from Zavala, the Chargers found themselves ahead by 9-points. The Chargers would only allow the Gauchos three more points before closing out the set, 25-13.

The Chargers did not faulter in the third set, putting the match away, 25-17. Owens led the Chargers in points with 21 for the night. She had 19 kills and 4 digs. Woodward added 9 kills and 5 blocks on the night.

The No. 19 Chargers have four games left in the regular season. They are set to resume action at home on Friday, November 2 at 6:00 pm against the Rustlers of Golden West College.
