No. 18 Chargers Knock Off Tigers in Four Sets

RIVERSIDE, CA- The Cypress College women's volleyball team (13-7, 8-3 OEC) continued their win streak with a road victory over the Riverside City College Tigers (13-8, 6-5 OEC) on Friday, 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 29-27).

The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking a 3-0 lead with kills from Savannah Johnson and Kayla Owens, followed by a service ace from Danielle Gomez. The Tigers would take the next point before the Chargers returned with another kill from Owens. With two errors from the Tigers, the Chargers found themselves back up by three. The back and forth play continued, but the Chargers would further the distance in points and take the first set, 25-20.

A battle was brewing in the second set, as both teams found themselves running away with points. It looked like the Chargers were about to pull away, leading 17-10, but the Tigers fought their way back to tie the set at 24 apiece. A kill and an ace from the Tigers would propel them past the Chargers to take the second set, 26-24.

The Chargers found themselves trailing in the third set, 6-12. Errors by the Tigers and a kill by Owens would close the gap and the Chargers were now tied, 12-12. An ace by Brittany Zavala, kills by Owens and Berneker, and a block from Johnson elevated the Chargers to take and keep the lead, 25-22.

In a nail biting fourth set, the Chargers found themselves behind again. Just when it looked like the Tigers would take the set, a push from the Chargers would close the gap. Tied at 27 apiece, a kill by Owens from Gomez, would give the Chargers their first lead of the set. An ace from Zavala would seal the win for the Chargers, 29-27.

Women's volleyball will host Saddleback College on Halloween night at 6:00 pm.
