No. 15 Chargers Fight Off Mounties in Four Sets

WALNUT, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team picked up their fifth win of the season in four sets last night as they took on the Mounties of Mt. San Antonio College (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15).

The Chargers started the game taking the first four points of the set. Kills from Savannah Johnson, Holly Cabrajac, Brittany Zavala, and Kayla Owens would extend their lead over the Mounties to take the first set (25-15).

Cypress go off to a slow start in the second set, finding themselves trailing the Mounties 10-0. A kill by Khamis Berneker would breathe life back in to the Chargers and earn them their first point of the second set. The Chargers fought their way back with kills from Owens and Jane Woodward. Remarkably, the Chargers went on to take the second set (25-21).

The third set was hard fought, but in the end, Cypress would fall to the Mounties (23-25). However, the Chargers were able to bounce back, dominating the fourth set (25-15) to end the match.

The sohpmore duo of Kayla Owens and Jane Woodward led the Chargers with a combined for 24 kills on the night, while Alisha Ormond and Zavala carried the defense, notching 15 and 12 digs, respectively.

Women's volleyball is set to open Orange Empire Conference play on Friday, September 14th, as they travel to take on the Pirates of Orange Coast College at 6:00 pm.
