By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA- The No. 13 Cypress College Volleyball team (5-2) took care of business in their home opener with a victory over Mt. San Antonio College (1-6) in five sets (25-15, 21-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-6). The Chargers have now picked up three victories over the Mounties this season, all coming in five sets.

Freshman outside hitter Kayla Owens led the way for Cypress with 18 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Khamis Berneker and sophomore Brianna Johnson each added 14 kills on the night. Toso Leae and Taylor Togia took turns setting up the Chargers' hitters, notching 23 assists and 5 digs each.

The first set began with the teams exchanging points before Cypress took control with an 8-0 run to take a 23-13 lead. The Chargers finished off the Mounties with ease in the first set, but serving struggles plagued Cypress in the second set and Mt. SAC tied the match 1-1.

The Cypress back line made huge plays in the third set, leading the way to an early 11-3 lead. The Chargers coasted to 25-8 victory in set three, taking a 2-1 lead. However, the Mounties managed to battle back and force a fifth set after stealing set four, 23-25.

Coach Welliver and the Chargers managed to keep their composure in front of the home crowd and seal the win with a 15-6 victory in the fifth set.

Women's volleyball will return to action on the road this Friday, as they prepare to defend their Orange Empire Conference title in the OEC opener at No. 2 Irvine Valley College. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
