CYPRESS CA, - The No. 9 Cypress College women's volleyball team (17-2, 10-1 OEC) bounced back from their first conference loss of the season with a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-22, 25-17) at home against Irvine Valley College (9-5, 7-4 OEC) on Wednesday night.

Freshman middle blocker Samantha Madrid led the Chargers with 17 Kills in 30 attempts, while sophomore outside hitter Rockelle Gholson added 13 kills and 8 digs. Sophomore setter Samantha Martinez facilitated the offense collecting 45 assists.

Both teams eased their way into the action before Cypress took control of the first set. A pair of kills from Gholson and some tremendous defense at the net from Brianna Johnson gave the Chargers a 12-6 advantage. Out of an Irvine timeout, the teams fought for momentum during the longest rally of the match. Cypress eventually took the point and went on to take set one, 25-14.

The Lasers battled in set number two as they capitalized on Cypress miscues to take a 9-5 lead. However, the Chargers refused to let up and tied the game at 12 apiece after a Johnson kill. With the game tied 20-20 the Lasers hit back-to-back kill attempts out of bounds, giving Cypress the late edge.  The Chargers went on to take set two 25-22. Cypress proved too much to handle in front of their home crowd for the Lasers as they cruised to a 25-17 victory in the third and final set.
