Women's Volleyball Captures Cerritos Tournament Title

The women's volleyball team (7-0) captured the Cerritos Tournament title over the weekend, capped off by a five-set come from behind victory over the No. 5 team in the state, El Camino. Setter Zhane (Nae) Bender took home all-tournament honors after helping the Chargers to the team title with an impressive performance in the final contest where she tallied 53 assists, 14 digs and five kills.

Also coming up big in the final game were Charity Dennis, Lindsey Ray and Maave (Ave) Mikaele. Dennis knocked down 20 kills, seven digs and three blocks, Ray had 27 kills, nine digs and five blocks (including two solo) and Mikaele notched 25 digs as the Chargers took down El Camino in five after losing the first two games (19-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 15-8).

En route to the championship title, the Chargers swept San Bernardino (25-18, 25-16, 25-19), Cuesta (25-16, 25-13, 25-14) and Glendale (25-17, 25-19, 25-12), and then took down Canyons in four (25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19).

Makayla Taylor also had a big tournament for the Chargers as she tallied 42 kills, nine aces, 25 digs and 10 blocks during the five matches.

Cypress returns home to host a rematch with El Camino on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
