Lady Chargers Take Five 1st Place Finishes at OEC Invite

RIVERSIDE, CA - The Lady Chargers swim and dive team finished 5th overall, ahead of Fullerton and Santa Ana College, with a total of 245.5 points at the Orange Empire Conference Invitational hosted by Riverside City College on Friday.

Leading the way was team captain Kayleen Bretz, who crushed the field in the 1650-yard freestyle.  Placing 1st with a time of 18:47.28 in the event, nearly 90 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Bretz had a heart-stopping finish in the 500-yard freestyle, tying for 1st place with a time of 5:27.86.

Co-captain Jordyn Morris finished 1st in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.14. This was her first time swimming the 200 event this season, showing promise for a record breaking swim and state cut time at the end of the season. Morris also placed 3rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.76.

Defending state champion diver Alejandra Gomez obliterated the competition on both boards, placing 1st on the 1-meter and 3-meter. Gomez was spectacular, falling short of her own Cypress College team record by 8.5 points, scoring a 231.4 on the 1-meter (team record 239.95).

There is only one invitational left before the conference championships and it looks as if the Lady Chargers are beginning to peak at the right time.  The next meet will be the Pasadena Invitational on April 6th and 7th at Pasadena City College.
