Chargers Smash 10 Team Records at OEC Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA - The Cypress College swim and dive team ended their season with state qualifiers and multiple team records erased. Mark Wyse, Brock Railey, Nathan Panter, Brian Vo, Ryan Napohaku, Kayleen Bretz, and Alejandra Gomez will represent the Chargers at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, May 4-6 at East Los Angeles College.

It has been 41 years since Doug Forbes swam the fastest 50-yard freestyle in Cypress College history, until April 20, 2017. Sophomore Mark Wyse was geared up for his freestyle events seeking to get his name up once again on the record board. Not only did Wyse accomplish his goal, he destroyed the record, swimming the 50-yard freestyle faster than any swimmer in Cypress College history. His race was not only a record breaking swim, it also landed Wyse a 3rd place finish and a ticket to the CCCAA State Championship meet, ranking 4th overall in the state.

Teammate Brock Railey also help lead the men's team to a victory over crosstown rivals Fullerton College, Santa Ana and Saddleback in the men's team scores. Railey set his sights on the record board and achieved his goal, setting the record in the 100-yard backstroke (54.65) besting the previous record by two seconds. The swim also secured Railey a spot in the CCCAA State Championship meet ranking 15th among all swimmers in the state.

For the first time in recent history Cypress College is sending multiple men's relay teams to the State Championships. Not only will Mark Wyse, Brock Railey, Brian Vo, and Nathan Panter be representing the Chargers at the state level, they also broke three relay team records on the way. Wyse, Railey, Vo, and Panter demolished a 42-year-old team record in the 400-freestyle relay (3:10.28), besting the 1975 team record by 1.4seconds. Records were also set for the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.79) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.79)

Leading the Lady Chargers to a phenomenal finish was freshman Kayleen Bretz who finished 2nd in the 1650-yard freestyle and 3rd in the 500-yard freestyle. Breaking her own Cypress Swim Team records set earlier in the season in the 1650 and 500-yard freestyle events. Bretz has solidified her bid for the CCCAA State Championship ranking 2nd overall in the 1650 across all California Community Colleges. Freshman teammate Dasha Petrov aided the ladies with a 3rd place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, narrowly missing out on the CCCAA State Meet. Petrov will now begin her training for next year as she has set her sights on the 2018 State Championships.

With another successful regular season concluded and 57 personal best records accomplished, the Chargers look forward to representing Cypress College at the State Championships at East Los Angeles College on May 4-6, 2017.
