Chargers Squeak Out Victory Over Irvine Valley, 1-0

Cypress, CA- Cypress (8-6-4, 6-4-3 OEC) end their two-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory at home on Friday over the Irvine Valley College Lasers (3-8-6, 1-7-5 OEC).

Play was even through the first half. Shots for the Chargers came from Elena Lucero, Nicolle Valdez, Audree Campos and Taleah Carter. Campos had back-to-back shots, one worthy of a save by the Irvine goalkeeper, but Carter had the best chance of the half. A pass from Morgan Patea was fed through the Laser defense, and with one touch, Carter was able to go around the goalkeeper and get off a shot that missed just wide of the empty net.

The Chargers netted what would end up being the game winning goal early in the second half. A cross from Valdez would find the head of sophomore forward, Anysa Mugica, who would put it home for her first goal of the season, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. Goalkeeper, Tabatha Macedo, would keep the Chargers out of trouble in the last 20 minutes of play. Macedo came up big making punching saves off of free kicks and tipping shots over the bar. Macedo finished with a career-high 8 saves for her eighth clean sheet this season.

The Chargers have three games left of regular season play. Their next match-up comes on Tuesday, October 30th at home against the Pirates of Orange Coast College at 3:00 pm.
