CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team fell short in their home matchup against the Orange Empire Conference's top team, Santiago Canyon, on Tuesday afternoon, 0-3. The Chargers currently remain in second place with an 8-5-3 overall record and 7-2-3 record in OEC play.
The Lady Chargers had their opportunities to score, especially early in the game, but the combination of Santiago keepers Gillian Kliss and Jessica Neighbors combined for 7 saves to keep Cypress off the board.
The Hawks' Cassie Soto opened the scoring on an unassisted goal in the 34th minute of action. Shortly following, Cypress defender Julissa Casillas made an aggressive play on the ball in the box, which prompted a Santiago Canyon penalty kick. Santiago's Angelica Ortega snuck one past Cypress keeper Tabatha Macedo to give the Hawks a 0-2 lead before halftime.
Cypress had a chance to cut into the lead midway through the second half when Margaret Zisk blasted a shot toward the goal that Kliss punched over the crossbar. Santiago found the back of the net late in the second half, extending their lead to 0-3.
Cypress women's soccer will look to bounce back on the road next Tuesday when they take on the Irvine Valley College Lasers at 3:00 pm.
