San Diego Miramar Upsets Cypress in 1st Round

Santa Ana, CA- The Cypress College women's soccer team (15-4-2) saw their season come to an end after a 2-0 loss to the Jets on Saturday afternoon. #10 San Diego Miramar (16-2-2) pulled off an upset victory over the #7 Chargers in the first round of the SoCal Regionals and will advance to face the winner of Orange Coast vs. Rio Hondo.

The Jets came out aggressive to start the game and the Chargers were unable to match their intensity. San Diego Miramar dominated the ball for much of the first half and were able to capitalize in the 33rd minute when sophomore midfielder Janely Moreno found the back of the net to give the Jets a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Trailing 1-0 to start the second half, Cypress had two great looks at goal. In the 46th minute Karla Lopez missed wide right, followed by a Kailey Merino shot from inside the box that also missed wide right.

The Jets continued to create plays with their offensive attack as well, Stephanie Martinez was fouled outside the box and the Jets were awarded with a free kick at the 85 minute mark. Freshman Sashia Alvarez drilled the free kick over the head of Cypress keeper Paulina Serna to give San Diego Miramar a 2-0 lead with just 5 minutes left in regulation.

Miramar would avenge their early season loss to Cypress with a 2-0 victory, advancing them to the next round.
