Avila Receives Charger of the Week (Sept. 21-27)

Gissel Avila had an unworldly performance last week for women's soccer to earn herself Charger of the Week. The freshman forward had two assists against Golden West on September 21 and followed up with a hat trick and another assist against Santa Ana the following day.

In the Golden West game, Avila created the first goal a minute and a half into the match, finding Taylor Jones to give the Chargers the early lead. Up 2-0 towards the end of the match, Gissel Avila added insult to injury by creating another goal opportunity in the 85th minute. Sophomore Karla Lopez finished Avila's pass to end the game 3-0.

Despite starting in back-to-back games, Avila did not show any signs of fatigue and put on a dynamic display against Santa Ana College. At 30th minute, Avila dribbled past Santa Ana's defense and slotted an easy shot past the keeper for the opening goal. 55 minutes into the match, Karla Lopez returned the favor from yesterday and delivered a cross to Avila to lead 3-0. Avila notched her third assist in two games after Layla Silva finished  her cross in the 57th minute to give the Chargers a commanding 4-0 lead. Sophomore Alexis Fuerte helped Avila to a hat trick in the 63rd after feeding her a short pass from the top of the box. Avila drilled the shot with prejudice to make it 5-0.

The freshman graduated from Brea Olinda High School and has played for the U-20 Mexico National Team. She currently leads the team in goals (4) and assists (4) this season.
