No. 5 Women's Soccer Handed First Loss

Cypress- Women's Soccer (4-1-0) took a tough 2-0 loss against Saddleback College (5-0-1) putting an end to their unbeaten streak. The home side struggled to string together passes on the offensive end and could not find a clean shot on goal despite outshooting Saddleback 9-7.

The Gauchos struck early in the 10th minute when Emilee Monnig found Helene Hollidge on the counter attack for the opening goal. The Chargers managed to recover and constantly pressed the ball forward, but to no avail. In the 16th minute, freshman Taylor Jones got a shot on goal that was saved at ease by Saddleback's keeper Shana Levanthal. In the 19th minute, sophomore Gissel Avila tried her luck from distance, but her shot went wide right. Monnig almost doubled Saddleback's lead in the 41st minute after shaking off a defender in the box, but fortunately for Cypress her shot went over the bar.

The Chargers looked more aggressive in the second half as sophomore Kristin Avila stole possession from the Gauchos on multiple occasions to give Cypress room to attack. Saddleback struggled to break past Cypress' midfield but caught a break when keeper Paulina Serna committed a foul outside the box trying to stop Saddleback's counter attack and was shown the yellow card in the 72nd minute. Saddleback's Breanna Taboada drilled a curling shot at the left side of the net to extend the Gaucho lead 2-0.

The Chargers will look to bounce back in their rescheduled match on the road against Golden West College on Monday, September 21st at 3:00 pm.
