No. 6 Cypress Defeats No. 11 IVC in SoCal Regional 1st Round

No. 6 Cypress Defeats No. 11 IVC in SoCal Regional 1st Round
Cypress – It took over 110 minutes of play, but the sixth-ranked Cypress women's soccer team defeated No. 11 Irvine Valley College on Saturday in the first round of the SoCal Regional after a penalty kick by Kendra Serrano found the back of the night in the first overtime period.

Cypress dominated the field of play in the first half and had several opportunities to get on the board, but could not find the back of the net. The Chargers out-shot the Lasers 5-1 in the first 45 minutes of action, while keeping the ball on IVC's side of the pitch for the majority of the half.

In the second half, both teams were battling to score. After a hard foul by IVC's Brittany Jenkins on Jackie Gomez, Jenny Marin lined up for the direct kick. A sharp shot towards the right corner of the goal by Marin was knocked wide by IVC keeper Yesenia Pulido as the score remained 0-0.

With IVC threatening, a big save by Paulina Serna with 10 minutes to play in the second half kept the game scoreless. IVC's Rosa Soto Aleman had a chance to break the scoreless game, but her shot sailed wide right during extra time.

In the first overtime, Gomez was kicked in the face with two minutes to play as she headed a ball towards the goal and Cypress was awarded a penalty kick. Serrano took the kick for Cypress and scored giving the Chargers the eventual game winning goal.

The 1-0 victory marked the 14th shutout of the season for the Chargers.
The Chargers will next travel to No. 3 Canyons on Tuesday, Nov. 26 for the second round game of the SoCal Regional (time TBA).
