Chargers Pick Up Win on Women in Sport Night

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's basketball (16-5, 4-1 OEC) picked up their fourth conference victory Friday night against the Golden West Rustlers (12-8, 0-5 OEC), . 

On Friday, Don Johnson Court recognized the importance of Women in Sport. During pregame, the Chargers donned shirts that read, "Equality in Women's Sports" and "We Deserve to be Here". At timeouts and breaks, the scoreboard showed influential women athletes and their inspiring quotes. 

In a slow paced first five minutes, Cypress and the visiting Rustlers struggled to consistently find the bucket. With three minutes left in the initial frame, the home team found their rhythm and took a double-digit advantage. The first quarter ended with a Charger 14-point edge, with a score of 23-9. The next ten minutes was all Cypress as they grew their lead while holding the Golden West offense to only five points. The half ended with the home team up with a dominant  26-point difference margin, 40-14. 

The second half began with more of an upbeat and energetic court than the previous 20 minutes. Golden West managed to outscore their total points in the first half in the third frame alone. But Cypress continued their onslaught of scoring with the consistent 20-point plus lead. Nearing the end of the third quarter, Ashley Hawkins acquired a triple-double in rebounds, points and assists. 

As the game entered the final ten minutes, Cypress was on top by 30, 61-31. The home team worked to control possession to close out the matchup. In the two teams first matchup, the Chargers defeated Golden West, 77-50. Ashley Hawkins picked up a triple-double with her 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Second in scoring was Jasmine Uy as she accumulated 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Jaylene Oviedo also tallied 14 points and 4 rebounds. With the Cypress win, the team stays on top of the OEC standings with four conference victories. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers next game will be at Don Johnson Court against the Fullerton Hornets. Start time will be at 5pm.
