Cypress Late Game Efforts Come Up Short

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's basketball (5-3, 0-0 OEC) lose their second matchup of the Lady Charger Classic to the Merced Blue Devils (5-4, 0-0 CVC), 77-71.

 The start of the game brought two high energy and fast teams. Cypress took a five point lead midway through the first quarter. Merced gained control and the lead, holding onto a double digit advantage throughout the first two quarters. 

The Chargers played behind in the first two quarters and went into halftime down 41-27. Going into the third quarter, Cypress acquired momentum from their home court crowd. The Chargers rallied back to outscore the Blue Devils 24-20 in the third frame. 

With four minutes left in the last quarter, Cypress found themselves within one. Leading scorer, Ashley Hawkins made Don Johnson Court erupt by taking the lead 66-65 with a jump shot. The Chargers lead was temporary as Merced responded with their own jump shot and regained the lead. 

With a valiant fight, the Chargers attempted to climb back in. Three minutes remaining, the Blue Devils took a seven point lead and did not look back. Cypress late game efforts came up short and the Chargers lost their second matchup of the tournament. 

 

UP NEXT: The Chargers play their final game of the Lady Charger Classic on Sunday against East Los Angeles College. Tip off will be at 3PM.
