4 Cypress Women's Basketball Players Headed to the Next Level

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress College women's basketball program completed a successful (21-7) season in which they made a trip to the CCCAA Regional Championships. Four players from the 2019-2020 season have since committed to play at the next level at three different four-year universities. Jessica Barrow, Alison Nelson, Sara Weber, and Celine Altamirano will be spread across the country as they take their talents to the next level.

Jessica Barrow accepted a full-ride scholarship to Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. NSU, located in Tahlequah, OK, competes at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Cypress basketball star will be greatly missed after her lone season with the Chargers in which she led the team in points, blocks, three pointers, free throw percentage and field goal percentage. Barrow showed her all around talent in a breakout game vs. Long Beach when she scored 27 points, to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The Sunny Hills highschool alumna etched her name in the record books after finishing #9 all-time in points per game in a season (18.0) and #3 all-time in single season free throw percentage (78.6%). Barrow earned Second Team All-State honors and First Team All-OEC after scoring 20+ points in 12 games this season.

Alison Nelson and Sara Weber have teamed up at the next level and committed to Westcliff University in Irvine, CA. Westcliff competes at the NAIA level and is apart of the Pac 6 Conference. Nelson and Weber were both role players and key starters for the Chargers the last two seasons. Alison Nelson impacted the team with her mid-range shooting and rebounding abilities. Nelson led the team with 6.8 rebounds per game and was a staple in the starting lineup throughout the season. Nelson had a monster game in mid-December vs. LA Trade-tech where she dominated the boards bringing down 10 rebounds and pouring in 13 points. Sara Weber is a shooting guard from Buena Park highschool. She found herself in the starting lineup early on in the season, but transitioned to be a spark plug off the bench. Weber was a sharpshooter from three point range co-leading the team at 34.5% from behind the arc. She knocked down a three pointer in 23 of the 28 games and scored a season high 20 points vs. MiraCosta.

Celine Altamirano is a sophmore from Cantwell highschool. She comitted to Fisher University in Boston, Massachusetts after two seasons with Cypress. Altamirano is a speedy combo guard who showed her tough defense throughout the season. Altamirano started the season coming off the bench, but broke into the starting lineup for the final 11 games of the season. She scored 10 points in a crucial win over Rio Hondo in round 2 of the CCCAA regional playoffs. Celine impacted the game in various ways for the Chargers and her energy will be greatly missed next season.
