Chargers Storm Back and Knock Off Rio Hondo, 73-66

WHITTIER, CA- The Cypress College women's basketball team (20-6) traveled to Rio Hondo (20-8) Friday night for the 2nd round of the SoCal Regional. The Chargers overcame a 13-point deficit to stun the Roadrunners, 73-66.

The Chargers stumbled early as they saw Rio Hondo get out to an early lead. Cypress went 0 for 6 from the three point line in the first quarter, as the the Roadrunners went on a 19-2 run. The Chargers shot 25% from the field and were stagnent on the offensive end. Cypress had their backs against the wall heading into the second quarter, but they were able to stay composed and head into halftime down by 10, 37-27. Cypress got two quick buckets out of the break from Alison Nelson and Jessica Barrow. The Chargers took the momentum back from Rio Hondo and ran with it shooting 62% in the quarter. Jessica Barrow got the 4th quarter started with another jump shot to cut the deficit to 4, 52-48. With 6:55 to play First Team All-Conference, Pressila Blanco, made her presence felt as she knocked down 5 straight free throws to give the Chargers their first lead since the first quarter, 56-55. After another jumper by Blanco, the Roadrunners fought back to cut the Charger lead to 1. With 3:03 remaining All-State selection, Jessica Barrow, knocked down a dagger three-pointer to push the Cypress lead to 7. After a couple key free throws from All-OEC selection, Sarah Welch, Cypress completed the magnificent comeback, 73-66. 

UP NEXT: With the victory tonight, Cypress advances to the third round of the SoCal Regional. They will face the winner of tommorrow's matchup between #1 Moorpark and #16 Riverside. Full Bracket details can be found here.
