No. 20 Lady Chargers Outpace No. 14 Lasers; Move atop OEC

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team (14-7, 6-1 OEC) picked up a big victory at home over the Irvine Valley Lasers (16-4, 6-1 OEC) on Wednesday night, 74-58. The victory puts the Lady Chargers in a tie with Irvine Valley for first place atop the Orange Empire Conference standings. Cypress entered the game ranked No. 20 in the CCCSIA state rankings, while the Lasers came into the night ranked No. 14.

The Lady Chargers snapped the Lasers' nine-game win streak, holding them to 26.5% shooting, while forcing 13 turnovers on the night.

As has been the case all season, Cypress dominated in the painted area, outscoring the Lasers 42-16. The Charger bench was also a huge factor with Sara Weber and Nicole Miller each making big plays for Cypress down the stretch. Weber finished with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from long range. Miller, the Chargers' leading scorer and rebounder off the bench this season, added an efficient 14 points and 5 boards.

Sophomore center Hannah Avila-McArthur was the x-factor for Cypress as Irvine Valley seemingly had no answer for her down low. Avila-McArthur finished with her third double-double of the season, pouring in 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with a season-high 17 rebounds. She was perfect from the field in the fourth quarter, where she scored 10 of her 16 points to close out the Lasers.

Women's basketball will return to action at Saddleback College to take on the Gauchos on Friday at 7:00 pm.
