Chargers Struggle in Season Opening Loss to Moorpark, 96-63

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their season opener at home against the Moorpark College Raiders (1-0) on Saturday night, 96-63. The Lady Chargers struggled to get going on either end of the floor, shooting just 33% from the field, while allowing the Raiders to shoot 46% from the floor en-route to nearly 100 points.

Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter, before the Raiders finished the quarter with back-to-back layups to take a 20-16 lead. Moorpark continued their run with nine more unanswered points to begin the second quarter, allowing them to jump out ahead with a 43-27 lead at the half.

The Raiders went on another 12-0 run to start the second half, essentially putting the game out of reach for the Chargers.

Cypress freshman Gabrielle Samiy led the Chargers with 14 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Hannah Avila-McArthur added 11 points and 8 boards.

The Chargers had no answer for Moorpark's 2018 All-State selection, Barbara Rangel, who finished with game-highs in points (22), rebounds (16), and blocks (8).

Women's basketball will look to bounce-back in the Merced Tournament on Thursday, November 8 against Porterville at Merced College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
