Women's Basketball Captures Third Consecutive OEC Title

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team captured their third consecutive Orange Empire Conference Title in Gym II on an eventful Thursday night. Prior to tip-off, the Dean of Kinesiology/Athletics, Dr. Richard Rams, along with College President, Dr. JoAnna Schilling, and Vice President of Educational Programs and Student Services, Dr. Santanu Bandyopadhyay, honored Head Women's Basketball Coach Margaret Mohr for her 20 years of service at center court.

The Chargers went on to defeat Santa Ana College 85-65, finishing the regular season with an overall record of 21-7, including a 13-1 record in conference play. The Chargers, ranked No. 16 in the state, shared the conference title with No. 7 IVC, who also finished OEC play with a 13-1 record. It is the first 3-peat and eighth conference title in program history.

Sophomore guard Gabrielle Carbajal led the way against the Dons with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting. Carbajal added 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Sophomore guard Vivian Lara finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while freshman Nicole Miller chipped in 14 points and 7 boards off the bench.

Shortly following the game, the Chargers received a #12 seed in the 2018 CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs. Cypress will open postseason play on the road at #5 Ventura College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates are coming off their 28th consecutive Western State North Division Title with an overall record of 23-7.
