Women's Basketball Set to Host 34th Annual Lady Charger Classic

CYRPESS, CA – After winning back-to-back Orange Empire Conference Championships, expectations are high for the Cypress College women's basketball team this year. Back-to-back OEC Coach of the Year Margaret Mohr and her staff are fielding a young team, with just four sophomores and no returning starters from last season. However, the team received a No. 6 ranking in the CCCWBCA South Region Preseason Poll.

The Lady Chargers have gotten off to a rough start this season, going just 1-4 on the road to begin the year. Following a devastating 45-49 loss at Moorpark College in their season opener, Cypress picked up its lone victory thus far during their trip to Northern California, where they dominated Porterville College 75-38 to open up the Merced Tournament. Unfortunately, the Chargers dropped three straight following the win.

The team leaders and coaching staff have remained optimistic about what they can accomplish this season. "I think the challenge this year is growing all the time. We make sure our non-conference schedule is tough and this year is no different," said Coach Mohr. "I think they're learning what it takes to be a college athlete and our sophomores are stepping up into a leadership role, so I'm really excited."

The women's basketball team will host the 34th Annual Lady Charger Classic this Friday through Sunday (Dec. 1-3). Cypress will take on Santa Monica in their home opener on Friday at 6:00 pm.
